Part 1 Introduction (18 minutes):
- Where did you buy cigarettes 30 years ago?
- How many have smoked? No participants smoked and why.
- Cost of cigarettes then and now.
- Different ways of smoking or chewing tobacco and the accoutrements needed.
- Brands of cigarettes smoked.
- Smell of cigarettes.
Part 2. Covers types of tobacco (14 minutes) :
- Pipe tobacco. Types. How you prepared pipe tobacco. Lung cancer.
- Snuff. Royal Navy use? Why was it used? Legality of buying it. Snuff used at work.
- Royal Navy had cheaper access to tobacco (and rum).
- Cigars. Safer to use cigars. Frequency of cigar smoking. Use at formal dinners. Used by rich or at special functions. Special storage in shops.
Part 3. Legislation on smoking (10 minutes):
- Decline of smoking through legislation.
- Where can you smoke in public?
- Health affected by smoking.
- Smoker's cough.
- Bans of smoking has affected social habits.
- Court case against the government.
- Outside shelters at work for smokers.
Part 4. Legislation in progress through Parliament (5 minutes):
- Private members' bills were not successful.
- Bans on advertising on television.
- Future of smoking.
- E-cigarette introduced recently - is it a fashion?
- Do smokers realise that they smell of tobacco smoke or vapour?
- Smoking in cinemas.
The future of tobacco
- Smoking in teenage years. Is it increasing?
- Smoking outside causes objections.
- Smoking in cars with babies.
- Smoking outside while at work - lost time noticeable. Will it affect employment?
