The last chauffeur of the Gascoigne family at Lotherton

A book has been published about the twentieth century Gascoignes and their chauffeur, Bill Burlingham.

The Spirit of Lotherton is the remarkable story of William Burlingham, chauffeur for forty six years to three generations of the Gascoigne family of Lotherton Hall, Yorkshire.

Bill married Laura Foster just before the war and they lived happily in a cottage at Lotherton. Bill died in March 2011.

Bill's six year's army service was dramatic. He was at Dunkirk, D Day, Arnhem, saw Belsen and was wounded in action in Holland.

In retirement, Sir Alvary Gascoigne gifted the whole Lotherton estate to the City of Leeds.

Bill was a loyal, faithful, conscientious and diligent worker for forty six years, starting as a servant he became a treasured friend to the Gascoigne family.

He has become and will always represent, the true Spirit of Lotherton.
