PARLINGTON HALL
Barwicker No. 97
March 2010
The photograph of Parlington Hall was taken in the early years of the twentieth century but this is
not as I remember seeing it during World War 11. My great
aunt Annie and great uncle Harry Thorpe retired from
Beckside Farm, Aberford, shortly after the start of war and
they lived for a few years in a small cottage close to
Parlington Hall.
I remember visiting them; first cycling through the
Triumphal Arch, then past the Stable block to the cottage,
where nearby stood the ruins of the old hall. My cousin and I
used to explore the rootless building, with the remains of a
grand staircase disappearing into space where the first floor
had collapsed. The grown-ups did not seem to notice that we
had finished gathering the wild strawberries which grew in
the wood and had found exploring a dangerous building
much more exciting!
