Barwickians' Golfing Society the story continues...

Barwicker No.127
Summer 2018

Having reported on the first two years of the Golfing Society from its inception in 1959, we now move into the swinging 60s which is quite apt in the world of golf!

At the Committee meeting held in March 1961, the Hon. Treasurer reported that there was a slight loss on the Ladies Evening because only 6l were present and the Mansion had made a charge of £5.5s for room hire.

The Hon. Secretary also noted that the management of the Mansion did not approve of a band being hired privately and should a dance beheld, the charge for the room and band would be 25 guineas. This didn't appear to put the Committee off re-booking the Mansion because the following year this is what happened even though the cost of room and band hire jumped from £l3 to £25 and this additional cost was covered by increasing the ticket price from 2ls to 25s with a minimum of 60 attending.

At the Spring Meeting in April 196l at York Golf Club, Strensall. It was interesting to note that a golf ball was presented to Mr. T. Neal on for his sartorial appearance!

The Annual Dinner in 1962 was held at the Black Swan and at the Committee Meeting in January the Secretary reported that the cost of the menu would be 10/6 and it was decided that in order to defray the cost of guests, members were to be charged 12/6d per head.

It was at the AGM in February 1962 that the decision to give a donation to charity each year was first carried out. It was proposed by Mr. R. Lewis that the sum of £5 be given to a charity in the village and after lengthy discussions the recipient was to be the Darby & Joan Club and the Club received the same amount in the ensuing years together with the Village Hall Fund and the British Legion Lister House Fund.

In 1965, it was proposed to set up a Reserve Fund to cover any contingencies. £50 was to be placed with the Woolwich Equitable Building Society, the interest from this to be compounded to the account.

At the 1966 AGM, it was felt that the Society should make a gift to Garforth Golf Club as a token of the Society's appreciation for the support and facilities which the Golf Club had provided to members of the Society. It was decided subsequently to purchase from R.A. Lister & Co. Ltd. the 'Mendip' bench seat, 8 ft long at a price of £33.19s.0d and this eventually graced the Club Foyer.

By the end of 1966, the Society's membership was approaching the maximum of 40 allowed in the original Constitution so it was proposed that the Constitution be amended from a total of 40 playing members and that those present Members who through illness, injury or longevity had ceased to participate actively in the Society's golfing tournaments, should be recognized as being non-playing members for this purpose. This was accepted at the AGM in 1967.
