A Toll-Bar Near Wetherby
Extract from Leeds Mercury, 9 December 1905
Barwicker No 120
The Clerk to the Wetherby Guardians, at their meeting this week,
reporting on an existing toll-bar at Whin Moor, said that under the
Enclosure Act of 36, during the reign of George III (1796) relating to
the parish of Barwick-in-Elmet, in the absence of any evidence as to
origin of the tolls, the tolls could still be legally demanded.
It was suggested that Colonel Gascoigne be asked to forego in future
his collection of the usual toll, but it was finally agreed to bring the
whole matter to the notice of the County Council, with a request that
they would go thoroughly into the matter, and if possible, abolish the
toll.
