Some early memories of Scholes in Summer

Barwicker No.102
June 2011

We mail the Barwicker to countries near and far and a former member of our Editorial Team. Tonv Cox who moved to Aberdeen (a couple of years ago. wrote to me recentlv after receiving several copies of "The Barwicker". Below is an extract from his letter.

"Receiving The Barwickers does, however, strike up fond memories of my formative, youthful years in Scholes. Then a truly rural village. with working farms. Very much alive and bustling with two cricket clubs, football, local golf club, tennis and whist drives and dances in the well-used village hall. A resident (no nonsense) village constable. Sunday afternoons, a time for people to parade along Main Street and Station Road in their Sunday best, exchanging greetings and local gossip. Rakehill Road/Lane, a riot of colour in summer time, displaying wild roses, may flower etc. tall foxgloves and other wild flowers aplenty. Skylarks strutting their songs high above the adjoining fields - Idyllic!"
