The maypole being raised viewed from the hole

A view of the maypole in the process of being raised from the hole into which it is planted. The soil is rammed firmly into the hole and the pole can be safely left for three years without the use of concrete or any other device. The view is taken west towards the Methodist Chapel and Hall Tower Field.
The last time the "traditional" method of raising the pole was used can be seen on "www.youtube.com". The commentary makes claims about its origin in the Dark Ages which cannot be verified. Otherwise it is a good record of how it used to be done. See the cine
