Long Lane/Chapel Lane, Barwick-in-Elmet in the early 1900's

Long Lane/Chapel Lane, Barwick-in-Elmet in the April 2002

This drawing was made by W.Jones about 1900 and is taken from Edmund Bogg's book "The Old Kingdom of Elmet: York and the Ainsty District. - Published 1902" . It is a rural view north from Long Lane near the turning into Chapel Lane before the farm on the left was demolished. The cottage ahead, Pear Tree Cottage, is shown with the pear tree in a healthy state. The view has now lost all rural traces as it is a busy junction as Long Lane nears the turning into Chapel Lane and meets Main Street. The farm on the left was demolished in the 1960's and is replaced by the clutter of modern life. The cottage on the opposite corner is Peartree Cottage and has altered little today. The pear tree in the picture was cut down in December 1998. Beyond stands the New Inn and the southern end of Main Street.
