View from the Church by B.R.HammondThis drawing first appeared in the society's publication "Pen Sketches of Barwick-in-Elmet" by the late Bart Hammond who was a founder member of the Society.
The drawing dates from the 1980's. Bart described the scene as follows: Emerging from the Church gates one is facing due west, looking along a short street called The Cross, which includes on the right, Church Row, the Black Swan Inn and the old shop and houses beyond. On the left, the high wall of old brickwork encloses the former Rectory and Coach House gardens. A good view of the Maypole and Cross is seen, with Hall Tower Hill and the Gascoigne Arms. |
